Arthur Samuel (1901-1990) was a pioneer of artificial intelligence research. From 1949 through the late 1960s, he did the best work in making computers learn from their experience. His vehicle for this was the game of checkers. Programs for playing games often fill the role in artificial intelligence research that the fruit fly Drosophila plays Arthur Samuel. After his work for Bell Laboratories since 1928, mostly on vacuum tubes, including improvements of Radar during World War II, the distinguished electrical engineer Arthur Lee Samuel (1901-1990), became a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he initiated the ILLIAC project. Arthur Samuel was born in 1901 in Emporia, Kansas. He graduated from the College of Emporia, and while also working intermittently at General Electric Company in Schenectady, he went on to earn a Master of Science degree from MIT in 1926. He later did graduate work in physics at Columbia University. In 1946 the College of Emporia awarded him an Arthur Samuel (1901-1990) was a pioneer of artificial intelligence research.
